PITCHING IN FOR THE HOSPITAL

The Murray River Ceilidhs are back, bigger and better than ever. They started on March 10, 2007, with the objective of raising money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Equipment Fund.
The chair of the Ceilidh Committee, Garnet Buell,(1.6B.6.5,2.) said the annual event continues to grow and the committee, with the support of Islanders, topped its goal of raising $100,600 over six years.
This year's goal is $25,000 and the Ceilidhs will be held each Saturday in April and up to and including May 26.
Each show includes lots of local entertainers, and raises money from entrance fees, a 50-50 draw, and an auction of baked goods.
In addition community volunteers Eva Demeulenare and Marvin MacLeod have donated gifts that will be raffled this year. Eva and Marvin will be selling tickets at the Ceilidhs and also at several community outlets in the next couple of months. The prizes are a gift basket and a pine corner cabinet.

Meanwhile Garnet is being honoured for his work to date. He was among eight Islanders who were recognized for their volunteer contributions to the people and communities of Prince Edward Island at a ceremony at Government House hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor. Premier Pat Binns presented the awards, and pointed out that Garnet has already raised more than $100,000 for the hospital and is still going.
Garnet said, “We’re very, very fortunate to have a hospital like we have for this small Island with all of the great equipment, a lot of it paid for and we’re still working on more."

A Passion for Decorating

You might say it was a match made in heaven, but it would be more correct to say it was made in Montague. Judy Koke and Alisa Beck (1.11.8.3.4.3.) are in the wedding decorating business. They met 5 years ago and realized right away that they had a lot in common.
Judy wasted no time in asking Alisa if she would help with decorating for weddings.
Judy's first experience in wedding decorating was for her niece's wedding. Alisa owns her own business, Decorating Dilemna, and has been interested in decorating since she was a child.
They formed a partnership last year and since then have done the decorations for 15 weddings.
Alisa said for her this is not work, because its something she loves to do and enjoys seeing the reaction of the bride when she sees what they have created. “This is the most important day for the bride and groom, so everything should be perfect,” Alisa said.
The two women meet with the couple to discuss details and get an idea of what the bride has in mind. After that they work hard to ensure that everything goes smoothly and the bride is happy with their efforts.
They told Lorie O'Halloran of The Eastern Graphic that they keep up-to-date by reading wedding and decorating magazines and watching TV shows along the same lines. At the moment they can handle a wedding with up to 300 guests.
They can expand easily because most of the props were built by their husbands, George Koke and Ryan Beck.

Sharp Turn Causes Concern

Work is about to get underway on the new bridge in Montague and there is concern that there could be problems for large vehicles while the work is in progress. Construction of the temporary bridge could start this month depending on the weather and replacement of the existing bridge will begin in May. The temporary bridge will join Water Street on the south side of the river to Station Street on the north side.
The Montague Fire Chief,Harry Annear,(1.11.6,4.4.) met with Darrell Evans, the bridge design manager to discuss his concern about fire trucks having to make a sharp turn on water street to get on the bridge. No decisions were made and the fire chief told Lorie O'Halloran of the Eastern Graphic that,"for now we’ll plan to play it by ear."
At a public meeting to discuss the problem, Mr. Evans said emergency vehicles would not be affected by traffic due to construction. Once a contractor is hired, flag people will meet with emergency personnel to work out a suitable plan.
"Traffic is traffic and the bridge construction will be a difficult process for all,” Mr. Evans said.

Montague Student Enters Miss Teen Canada Pageant.

A Montague High School Student, Ellen Panting, heads for Montreal in April to compete in the Miss Teen Canada Pageant. At 17 Ellen is a veteran of this type of competition. She was crowned Queen of the Northumberland Fisheries Fisheries Festival in 2005. She also won the talent section of the Miss Montague contest.
A scout for the Miss Teen Canada pageant was on the Island last summer to recruit candidates for the national competition and Ellen was chosen to represent PEI.
“I had so much fun during the Miss Northumberland Contest that I thought it would be fun and a great experience to participate in the Miss Teen Canada pageant,” Ellen said.
Her mother, Maureen, said Ellen was always quite feminine, dressing up and doing her hair when she was a child.
One of Ellen’s biggest influences was her grandmother, Laurie Annear. She and Ellen spent a lot of time baking, doing crafts and dressing up.
Ellen is an honour roll student in Grade 12 and she plans to go to university following graduation. “I’m not completely sure what I want to do yet, but I'm keeping my options open,” Ellen said.

A GOOD YEAR FOR THE TOMMIES

The St. Thomas University Tommies of Fredericton, N.B., made a good showing in the past hockey season, ably assisted by two Beck descendants. Justin Bowers (1.4.6.5,10,1,2.) was a standout in his first year with the team, while Thatcher Bell (1.4.6.5,3.6,3.) performed well in his final year with the team.
In the eight team Atlantic University league, the Tommies finished in fifth place, good enough for a playoff berth. They defeated St. Mary's University of Halifax in the quarter finals, but lost out to the Universite de Moncton in the semifinals.
In the 28 game regular season, Justin finished third in scoring with 14 goals and 15 assists for a total of 29 points. Thatcher, who was hobbled by back problems in recent years, was next in team scoring with 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points.
